Police officer avoids serious injury after van 'deliberately' driven at him in Belfast

Police officer escapes serious injury after van 'deliberately' driven at him in Belfast

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is appealing for witnesses following a “reckless and deliberate” attack on one of its officers in Belfast on Tuesday evening.

The officer was on patrol in the Glen Road area of west Belfast when a van was driven at him at speed.

The officer managed to avoid being hit by the van, but he was knocked to the ground and sustained minor injuries.

The van then made off from the scene.

The PSNI is treating the incident as a “reckless and deliberate attempt to cause serious injury to an officer”.

Detective Inspector Stephen Harvey said: “This was a reckless and deliberate attempt to cause serious injury to an officer who was simply carrying out his duties.

“We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information about the van involved to contact us.

“We are also appealing to the driver of the van to come forward and explain their actions.

“This type of behavior is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

“We are committed to keeping our communities safe, and we will not allow those who seek to harm our officers to go unpunished.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the PSNI on 101, quoting reference 1089 of 21/02/23.

Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
